Sweden are appealing the decision to give Nicola Spirig gold and Lisa Norden silver in the Olympic Triathlon.
CAS is expected to make its decision tomorrow
Sweden believe Lisa Norden also deserves a gold medal for her performance in the Olympic triathlon, where the Swede and Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig both recorded exactly the same finish time and have taken their case against the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
CAS responded, saying they would give a final verdict by midday Saturday.
Sweden previously appealed the medal decision after the race to the ITU, who rejected it on Wednesday. Associated Press reported a statement from the Swedish Olympic team, which said:
“The ITU did not comply with its own rules (and) may not have taken into account the position of the athletes’ torsos when establishing the medal positions.
“It is not possible to distinguish precisely on the photo-finish the position of Spirig’s torso, which is slightly back from her belly and which is hidden by the torso of the Swedish athlete.”
Reuters reported that CAS then mirrored these concerns in their own statement, which said:
“The Swedish NOC and the STF consider that the ITU did not comply with its own rules because it may not have taken into account the position of the athletes’ torsos when establishing the medal positions.
“They add that it is not possible to distinguish precisely on the photo-finish the position of Spirig’s torso, which is slightly back from her belly and which is hidden by the torso of the Swedish athlete.”
